We're nearing the end of National School Breakfast Week, and reading about the push to increase the number of youngsters receiving breakfast at school made me realize that I need some new ideas for my own kids. We are not a morning family. Rather, we tend to grunt at each other first thing, instead of embracing the day with enthusiasm. We need fast recipes that will get six of us fed and on our way within a hectic half-hour each morning. I know how important breakfast is for both body and brain. "Research shows that a nutritious breakfast at home or school boosts children's ability to learn, fosters better classroom behavior, and reduces visits to the school nurse," said Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon this week. And adults benefit from the same breakfast boost: I find I snack less during the day if I start off with a filling breakfast, and it does give me energy. So, I need to make an effort to get back on track. I love these Banana-Oat Pancakes, and sometimes we'll have yogurt with fruit chopped into it. French toast is also a quick staple. I'll have to work my way through Epi's collection of kid-friendly Quick and Healthy Breakfast Recipes, though. What trusty go-to breakfast recipes do you turn to? Help me power-up my kids for school!

I'm writing this post from St. Lucia, where I'm vacationing with my husband. We've had some terrific food heremore on that in a later postbut for the last two days, we've been laid up with an unpleasant stomach bug. Normally, I'm a pretty adventurous eater when I'm travelingthe more of the local cuisine I can taste, the betterbut being sick turned me into a completely different kind of traveler. I wanted the comfort foods that I normally eat at home to make me feel betterwhite rice, miso soup, applesauce, and sports drinks. Nothing else sounded appealing. Our resort was nice enough to make up a plate of vegetables in broth and a dish of rice, but the same thing that I'd previously been loving about the food herethat even the side dishes are wonderfully flavorful and well spicedsuddenly became a problem. Everything had way too much flavor. It was a strange experience, temporarily becoming someone who craved bland food while in a land of glorious tropical fruit and pungent curries, but it made me think about the comforting, healing aspect of eating when you're not feeling well. Even for those of us who like to eat adventurously, there are times when food is more of a medicine than an experience. What are your go-to comfort foods when you're under the weather?
